Bausch + Lomb’s line of Ultra contact lenses has received FDA approval for extended wear, the company announced today. Consumers can now wear these lenses continuously for up to six nights and seven days. The product line includes single vision, toric and multifocal options.

Ultra lenses are intended for monthly replacement; both new and existing users can now opt to include overnight wear for up to a week at a time within that replacement schedule. The company cautions, however, that extended wear increases the risk of microbial keratitis and other potentially vision-threatening adverse events. “If a patient experiences eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes or redness of the eye,” the company said in a press release, “the patient should be instructed to immediately remove the lenses and promptly contact his or her eye care practitioner.”
