Wipe your glasses! Both contact lens wearers and people wearing unclean spectacles have significantly larger halos than emmetropes and those wearing cleaned spectacle lenses, according to a study in the March issue of Clinical and Experimental Optometry. Unclean spectacles may affect the accuracy of results in psychophysical and clinical testing, the researchers conclude. The reduction in halo size after cleaning lenses is significant.

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) is looking for a new executive director and a new headquarters. (For the last 12 years, WCO has been based out of Pennsylvania College of Optometry, with Melissa Padilla as executive director.) Summer babies are more likely to grow up to be myopes, according a study in Aprils Ophthalmology. Specifically, babies born in June or July have a 24% greater chance of becoming severely myopic than those born in December or January. The exact associating mechanism is not known, but might be related to exposure to natural light during the early perinatal period, the authors write.
