Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)especially neovascular AMDis associated with a higher risk of myocardial infarction (MI), according to a study at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. The authors believe that their findings, if confirmed by other studies that control for smoking and other lifestyle variables, suggest the possibility of shared common antecedents between MI and AMD.


Researchers at Jules Stein Eye Institute, of the University of California at Los Angeles, found that elderly patients with atrophic AMD have an 11% greater risk of hip fractures than non-AMD patients.
