Until now, there has been no proven way to treat central
retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). But, the Standard Care vs. Corticosteroid for
Retinal Vein Occlusion (SCORE) study, published in September’s Archives of
Ophthalmology, has found that triamcinolone injections can reduce CRVO-related
vision loss. Treated patients were also five times more likely to gain vision
than non-treated patients.
AMD Alliance International is hosting a video contest about
age-related macular degeneration. The grand prize: $10,000. Entrants should
submit original videos (less than three minutes) that creatively communicate
the impact of AMD. “The video submissions will dramatize the societal,
psychological and physiological effects of AMD,” says Wanda Hamilton, CEO of
AMD Alliance International. “Our goal is that after viewing the videos … people
will be motivated to get regular eye exams.” Videos will be judged on
originality, creativity, effectiveness, production quality and YouTube hits.
The deadline is February 28, 2010. Winners will be announced March 31, 2010.

Low vision? There’s an app for that.
A new $1.99 application (“app”) for the Apple iPhone allows the device to be
used as a 4x magnifying glass. The iMagnify application, from Tech 1, LLC,
provides pinpoint precision to read fine print or ranges broad enough to sweep
across the page of a book, the company says. iMagnify is available in the Apple
App Store and through the application’s website,
www.imagnifyapplication.com.
