INSTRUMENTS
Topography System
The new CTS Corneal Topography System from Reich-ert Ophthalmic contains a topographer, computer, software and instrument table in one machine. The CTS utilizes a small-cone design and Placido ring technology to record measurements and provide shadow-free coverage of the corneal surface. A joystick control and built-in LCD monitor operate the unit.
Other features include a built-in patient database. Operators can create a patient record in which all future exams for that patient will automatically be stored. A contact lens tool also helps with gas permeable lens fits by suggesting lens parameters and simulating lens movement. Call 1-888-849-8955 or go to www.reichert.com.
THERAPEUTICS Contact Lenses: New Designs Ortho-K Approval Contacts for Presbyopes
Generic Ciprofloxacin
Bausch & Lomb has received FDA approval to manufacture and sell ciprofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution. The medication is indicated for use in treating bacterial eye infections, including conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. B&L drops are available now in 2.5ml, 5ml and 10ml bottles. (The branded form of the medication is sold by Alcon, under the name Ciloxan.) Call 1-800-323-0000 or go to www.bausch.com.
The FDA recently approved Euclid System Corporations Emerald orthokeratology lens for overnight wear. Ortho-K is a non-surgical, temporary alternative treatment for vision correction that can improve a patients vision while sleeping. Euclids Emerald lenses are custom designed for each patient based on a proprietary mathematical fitting formula and are produced in a high-Dk Boston material.
The company says the best candidates for ortho-K are patients with a low amount of myopia, generally less than 5.00D. Call 1-800-477-9396 or go to www.euclidsys.com.
The PolyVue Presbyopic System of soft contact lenses by Poly-Vue Distribution is specifically designed to match the changing needs of presbyopic patients. The company says the four versions of its High Definition lenses incorporate the ideal aspheric curve for each base power to better correct spherical aberration. PolyVue High Definition lenses are made using proprietary Hypathin mold core technology and come in the following options:
PolyVue High Definition. This aspheric lens compensates for aberration caused by lens flexure on the eye and reduces refractive astigmatism.
PolyVue High Definition Toric. The optics in this toric lens minimize cylinder powers by masking up to 1.00D of refractive astigmatism.
PolyVue High Definition Progressive. This lens is intended for moderate to low presbyopes. Four zones of multi-aspheric power progression provide a full range of vision from distance to near. The center accommodation zone comes in two sizes and simulates natural accommodation by creating a very small area of magnification.
PolyVue High Definition Toric Progressive. This cast-molded toric progressive is designed for presbyopes with astigmatism equal to or greater than 0.75D. It features progressive optics at the center of the front surface of the lens, with cylinder power in the back. Four zones of multi-aspheric power progression provide patients with a full range of vision.
Each lens type is available in a range of powers from +5.00D to 7.00D with an 8.6mm base curve and 14mm diameter. Progressive versions comes with add powers of up to +3.25D. Call (510) 741-0662 or go to www.polyvue.com.
